The first official World Chess Championship was held in 1886 between Wilhelm Steinitz and Johannes Zukertort in the United States, establishing a lineage of world champions that continues to this day. In 1997, IBM's Deep Blue made international headlines by defeating reigning world champion Garry Kasparov, marking a watershed moment in the history of artificial intelligence. Today, chess is played by an estimated 600 million people worldwide, governed internationally by FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs), founded in Paris in 1924.
