On May 5, 1992, a small company called id Software in Mesquite, Texas, released a game that would change everything. Wolfenstein 3D was not the first first-person shooter — that honour arguably belongs to MIDI Maze (1987) or Hovertank 3D (1991) — but it was the first to make millions of people feel what it was like to move through a three-dimensional world from a first-person perspective. Designed by John Romero and programmed by John Carmack, Wolfenstein 3D used raycasting technology to create the illusion of 3D on machines that had no 3D graphics hardware. The effect was electrifying: players navigated a Nazi fortress, shooting soldiers and collecting treasure, experiencing a level of immersion no game had offered before. The FPS genre truly came into its own a year later with Doom, also by id Software, released on December 10, 1993. Doom added textured floors and ceilings, dynamic lighting, and multiplayer deathmatch — an innovation that gave birth to competitive first-person gaming. Doom was so influential that it was installed on more computers than Windows 95 in its first year. The genre evolved through Half-Life (1998), which introduced narrative-driven first-person gaming, through Halo (2001), which mastered the console FPS, and through Call of Duty 4 (2007), which perfected the modern military shooter. Lidar brings this tradition into the survival horror subgenre. You are alone in a dark environment with only a lidar scanner — a device that uses laser pulses to map your surroundings, inspired by real lidar technology used in autonomous vehicles since the 1960s. The scanner reveals walls, objects, and threats hidden in the darkness, creating a unique blend of exploration and tension. Use WASD to move, mouse to scan, and trust no shadow. Every playthrough reveals the environment differently, keeping the experience fresh and unpredictable. Lidar was developed by SamyRobot as a showcase of browser-based horror.
