In 1976, a programmer named Will Crowther wrote a text-based exploration game called Colossal Cave Adventure on a PDP-10 mainframe at Bolt, Beranek and Newman in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Crowther was an avid caver who had mapped part of the Mammoth Cave system in Kentucky, and his game simulated exploring that cave through typed commands. "You are at the end of a road before a small brick building," read the first line of text, and an entire genre was born. Colossal Cave Adventure was expanded by Don Woods at Stanford, and together they created the template for every adventure game that followed: exploration, puzzle-solving, treasure collection, and narrative discovery driven entirely by player choice. The adventure genre evolved through graphic adventures created by Roberta Williams and Sierra On-Line in the 1980s — King's Quest, Space Quest, Leisure Suit Larry — which added visual interfaces while keeping the core focus on story and puzzle-solving. LucasArts revolutionized the genre in the 1990s with Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, and Grim Fandango, games that replaced pixel-hunting with conversation-based puzzles and memorable characters. Meanwhile, a different branch of the adventure tree grew from Myst (1993), a first-person puzzle adventure that became the best-selling PC game of its era, proving that adults who did not normally play video games would engage with a richly atmospheric world of puzzles and discovery. Night Tales draws on this entire tradition, placing you in a dark fantasy world where exploration and story are paramount. Navigate through ancient ruins and moonlit forests, solve puzzles that integrate naturally with the environment, and shape the narrative through dialogue choices. The visual design draws on European dark fantasy aesthetics — muted blues, deep purples, and cold whites punctuated by warm lantern light. Night Tales demonstrates that compelling narratives do not require expensive hardware — only careful writing, atmospheric art direction, and respect for the player's intelligence.
