Not Goat Souls
The genre known today as "Soulslike" began with an unlikely project at the Japanese studio FromSoftware. In 2006, director Hidetaka Miyazaki took over development of a struggling fantasy action game called Demon's Souls, and he made a series of radical decisions. He refused to simplify the game for casual players. He designed a combat system where every enemy could kill you if you were careless. He created a connected world where death was not a failure state but a core mechanic — you would return as a ghost, your health halved, forced to learn from your mistakes. Publishers were sceptical. Sony passed on publishing Demon's Souls outside Japan, calling it "too hard and too niche." Atlus eventually released it in North America in 2009, and to everyone's surprise, it became a cult hit. Players discovered that the game's difficulty was not arbitrary — it was a teacher. Every death taught you something: an enemy's attack pattern, a hidden trap, a shortcut you had missed. The satisfaction of overcoming Demon's Souls was unlike anything else in gaming because the game never held your hand. FromSoftware followed with Dark Souls in 2011, which expanded the formula with a larger connected world, deeper lore told through item descriptions and environmental storytelling, and some of the most memorable boss encounters ever designed. Dark Souls sold over 2 million copies by 2013 and spawned two sequels, a dedicated fan community, and an entire subgenre of imitators and spiritual successors. Games like Blasphemous, Hollow Knight, and Salt and Sanctuary adopted the Souls formula in 2D. Nioh and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice pushed the action to new levels of precision. Elden Ring, released in 2022, became FromSoftware's best-selling game with over 20 million copies, proving that the genre's appeal had gone fully mainstream.
