The Woven Garden

In 1981, a young designer at Nintendo named Shigeru Miyamoto created a game about a carpenter trying to rescue his girlfriend from a giant ape. Donkey Kong was not the first platform game — earlier titles like Space Panic (1980) had climbing mechanics — but it was the first to integrate jumping as a core mechanic across multiple levels. The jump button had existed in games before, but Donkey Kong made it the central verb of play. This simple innovation — pressing a button to overcome a vertical obstacle — proved so intuitively satisfying that it defined the most successful genre in gaming history. The platformer evolved through Super Mario Bros. (1985), which perfected the physics of running and jumping and introduced the concept of scrolling levels. Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) added speed as a mechanical focus. Super Metroid (1994) and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (1997) created the "Metroidvania" subgenre, where platforming intertwined with exploration and ability-gated progression. Meanwhile, a very different kind of platformer emerged from Neversoft's Spider-Man (2000) for the PlayStation. This game introduced web-swinging as a platforming mechanic — the player could shoot webs at surfaces and swing through a three-dimensional representation of New York City. It was a revelation: instead of simply jumping between platforms, you actively created your own pathways by attaching webs to the environment. The Woven Garden draws on both traditions. You play as a web-slinging hero navigating a beautifully crafted garden world, combining the precision platforming of Super Mario with the freedom of web-based movement from Spider-Man. Shoot webs to interact with the environment, swing across gaps, and fight enemies that require both reflexes and strategy.
