The tower defense genre traces its origins to a 1990 StarCraft custom map called "Turret Defense" created by a player known as "RPGCo." Players built defensive turrets at predetermined locations while waves of enemies marched along fixed paths. The concept spread through the StarCraft modding community and eventually jumped to the browser with Flash game Desktop Tower Defense, released in 2007 by Paul Preece. Desktop Tower Defense was the genre's breakout hit: over 15 million plays in its first year, and a dedicated following that built and shared their own level configurations. The rules were simple but the strategic depth was immense. Place towers on an empty grid. Enemy waves approach from the edges and must reach the centre. Each tower type has different strengths — some are fast but weak, some are slow but devastating, some slow enemies, some hit multiple targets at once. The placement of each tower matters because towers have finite range and enemies can follow different paths depending on where you build. The genre expanded rapidly through the 2000s. Bloons Tower Defense by Ninja Kiwi introduced cute visuals and a branching upgrade system that became the genre standard. Plants vs. Zombies by PopCap (2009) sold over 30 million copies and proved that tower defense could be a mainstream commercial success, not just a browser game curiosity. The genre has since evolved into hybrid forms — combining tower defense with role-playing progression, card-based mechanics, and even first-person shooting. Tower of Hope captures the essence of classic browser tower defense. Position your towers carefully, manage scarce resources, and upgrade your defences as waves of enemies grow in number, speed, and resilience. The genre's core satisfaction remains unchanged across decades: the moment your carefully planned defensive formation annihilates an incoming wave, every tower firing in perfect coordination, is one of gaming's purest pleasures. Tower of Hope demands that you think several waves ahead, understanding the map's geometry, predicting enemy pathing, and prioritising upgrades with the discipline of a military strategist.
